🍁During the Autumn Equinox, the sun crosses the celestial equator and, again in the course of the year, day and night are equivalent. The sun descends into the Hadprojects

h

e darkness begins to prevail over the Light.

🍁The druids called the Alban Elued Autumnal Equinox, “Water Light”, where water represents the cosmic ocean in which the Sun plunges, descending into the depths that become ever more obscure, like the days to come. It is a moment of transition, where the barrier between the visible and the invisible world becomes thinner.
🍁Alban Elved is the moment when the sun god begins to decline to make room for female lunar deities. The productive and reproductive cycle is over, the leaves start to turn yellow and the animals start to make provisions in anticipation of the arrival of the cold months.
The mystery of eternal life is celebrated. The Sun becomes the seed that will sustain life through the darkness of the winter months, the latest crops given by the generosity of the Goddess.

🍁The Goddess of the seasons reaches the age of old age, just as the night begins to lengthen and the days get shorter again. We can feel it in the freshness of the air and in the brightness of the Moon. Demeter makes her daughter to the underworld: Persephone has descended into the land of Hecate and Demeter stops all growth until her return. This is therefore the time to cry and rejoice, as we face the darkness and look back on the year we have just experienced. It is time to reflect on the goals achieved and on the aspects of life that we must overcome to grow. As Persephone has to separate from the world and from her mother to obtain the teachings of Hecate, each of us must face the mystery of our own life.

🍁During the period of the Equinox, the rites of Mithra were celebrated, lord of the cosmos and mediator between divinity and human beings, just as the axis of the equinoxes is intermediary between the two phases of the year. Mithra was often depicted in the middle of two torch bearers, one with the torch raised to symbolize the Spring Equinox and the other with the torch lowered to indicate the Autumn Equinox. Later the functions of Mithra were assumed by the archangel Michael, whose feast, together with that of the other two archangels Gabriel and Raphael occurs on 29 September. The equinoctial period of autumn, in the Anglo-Saxon countries, is in fact called Michaelmas.

🍁September is the period in which the Great Mysteries of Eleusis took place. The Eleusinian rituals, based on the symbolism of wheat, celebrated the myth of Demeter and his daughter Persephone. The initiates were presented with an ear of wheat accompanied by the words “in the silence the seed of wisdom is obtained”. In the myth, Persephone was captured by Hades, God of the Underworld. His mother Demeter, Goddess of the Wheat, was so desperate that she refused to make the earth flourish and bear fruit. The ground became bare and winter was born.

🍁According to the Celts, Mabon was the god of vegetation and crops, and son of Modron, the Mother Goddess. It is said that he was kidnapped and imprisoned, then freed by King Arthur. His abduction is’ the equivalent of Persephone

🍁One of the symbols of Mabon is wine. Dionysus, who according to some myths was born of Persephone and Hades, is the god of the vine and of intoxication. The process of making wine was so mysterious for the ancients that it was considered sacred, in fact the grapes were always accompanied by rituals throughout the harvest. The transformation from grapes into wine represented the spiritual transformation, perhaps linked to the fermentation that started from the dark and then came to light, ready. Furthermore, let us remember that wine led to an altered state of consciousness.

🍁The symbol of Mabon is the Doll of the Wheat, formed by the last spikes collected and tied with a red thread, buried in the fields for propitiatory purposes. Sometimes it was called “Girl of Ivy”, because ivy is a plant that stays green all winter and is the symbol of life that continues to grow in spiral.

🍁The sacred plant of the Autumn Equinox is wild blackberry. It is said that blackberries should not be eaten after the end of September, because “the devil spoils them”. This saying probably goes back to the fact that all that was not collected at the end of the season was an offer to the Earth to propitiate the following year.
In addition, wild blackberry is a substitute for the vine according to the Nordic countries. In fact we talk about an ancient arboreal calendar, according to Robert Graves, where there is the month of the vine, then that of the ivy, both plants of the rebirth. 🍁The swan is the animal of the Equinox, symbol of the immortality of the soul and guide of the dead in the afterlife. 🍁To sum up:
√ Invite your friends, sharing with them seasonal fruits and wine, leaving a part to the Earth as an offer
√ Decorate the table with leaves and walnuts
√ Thank the Earth by lighting a blue candle, the color of the cosmic ocean in which the sun sets
√ Do meditation and relax
√ Complete your projects
